Answers:
1. Productivity is a measure of economic performance that indicates how efficiently inputs are converted into output. Input is any resource used to create goods and service, and output is the quantity of goods or services produced.
Yes, we can say that productivity is a culture, an effort to use all resources of input effectively to maximize production of output.
2. There are many factors that affect a country’s productivity, such as investment in plant and equipment, innovation, improvements in supply chain logistics, education, enterprise and competition. The Solow residual, which is usually referred to as total factor productivity, measures the portion of an economy’s output growth that cannot be attributed to the accumulation of capital and labor. It is interpreted as the contribution to economic growth made by managerial, technological, strategic and financial innovations. Also known as multi-factor productivity (MFP), this measure of economic performance compares the number of goods and services produced to the number of combined inputs used to produce those goods and services. Inputs can include labor, capital, energy, materials and purchased services.
However, productivity is not necessarily an indicator of the health of an economy at a given point in time. For example, in the 2009 recession in the United States, output and hours worked were both falling while productivity was growing, because hours worked were falling faster than output. Because gains in productivity can occur both in recessions and in expansions, as it did in the late 1990s, one needs to take the economic context into account when analyzing productivity data.
3. Before Covid-19 pandemic, we were optimistic that the emphasis on Human Capital in our next 5-year government, can improve Indonesia people’s productivity. But then covid-19 has been changing many things, there have been many disruption cause by spreading of Covid-19 virus, for example: the investment had drastically changed, in March to September 2020 investor pulled out their investment fund from Indonesian capital market, supply chain logistics has been disturbed due to lockdown, Businesses halt to prevent spreading of the virus.
I hope once the situation become normal, all the effort to increase productivity will grow significantly.
